What is an AI agent?

A chatbot answers. An agent does: it reads files, searches the web, runs code, drafts emails, and keeps going step by step until the job is done or it needs you.

Claude Code, Codex, Grok Bot and Gemini CLI are all agents. Out of the box they are generalists: smart, but they don't know your workflow, your tools or your rules.

Three things turn a generalist into a specialist:

1. Skills: instructions for how to do a specific job well.
2. Connectors (MCP): access to your tools (email, calendar, store, ads).
3. A harness: the whole kit (rules, skills, connectors, routines, memory) packaged together.
